How Often Should You Get New Glasses?

Written by True Eye Experts

For some people choosing a new pair of glasses is exciting, while for others it can feel overwhelming. Whether or not you are longing for a new pair, how do you know you if you actually NEED to update your glasses? This is a great question and the answer depends on a few things:

When Did You Last Go To The Eye Doctor?

Going to the eye doctor is just as important as going to the dentist. Your eyes are constantly moving, so getting them checked at least once a year is the best way to figure out if you need a new prescription. If your doctor says your prescription has changed, this is the perfect time to get a new set of glasses.

Are Your Glasses Scratched?

Scratches on glasses seem to appear out of nowhere, but this is an obvious sign that it’s time to get new lenses. Having scratches on your glasses won’t necessarily harm your vision, but you might get headaches and eye strain from accidentally trying to focus on the scratch. This eye strain can cause long term damage, so scratched lenses should be fixed.

Are You Squinting?

You may find yourself squinting to focus better and lessen the light on your eyes. This shouldn’t be the case, however, and could mean that your prescription is getting worse. If your glasses are functioning as they should, you won’t have to squint to see properly.

Are You Having Trouble Cleaning Your Glasses?

Often, glasses are treated with special coatings to help with glare, UV protection, and scratch resistance. This coating can start to break down after a while and will leave a filmy appearance when you try to clean your lenses. This is a big indication that you need to get new glasses, because wearing the old pair could harm your eyes in the long run.

Are Your Glasses Outdated Or Out Of Style?

Just like other fashion trends, different styles of glasses come and go with the seasons. This may not seem like something that is very important but having stylish glasses can make you look and feel better. Also, wearing outdated prescription glasses can cause your eyes extra strain, which could be damaging in the long run. Vintage may be fun, but if the prescription is not your current one, then it could be very harmful. If you love your existing frames, you can ask your eye doctor about replacing just the lenses. Although, when you get new frames you update your look without replacing your whole wardrobe.

Is Your Vision Sometimes Blurry?

If your vision is occasionally blurry when you’re wearing glasses, then you should get your prescription checked. Your eye muscles may be weakening, and you probably need a stronger prescription.

Are You Having Trouble Seeing Up Close?

If you notice difficulties looking a short distance away, such as reading or using electronics, it could be a sign that you need reading glasses. This can happen at any age, so it is very important to get your eye checked regularly.

Have You Checked Your Insurance Coverage?

Commonly, insurance will cover new glasses or contacts once a year, making it a great time to go and get a new pair of glasses. If you ignore this or don’t get a new pair, you could be leaving free money on the table.

If you wear glasses and haven’t had your eyes checked in the last year, it’s time for a visit to the eye doctor. Getting new glasses can sometimes feel like a hassle but is extremely important for your long-term health.
