Our primary doctor at True Eye Experts of Trinity, Dr. Melissa Mercer, has several specialties you won’t find at other eye clinics near you. Here’s a look at some of her most sought-after specialties.
Keratoconus is a disorder where the cornea becomes thin and cone-shaped. The irregular cornea shape stops the light entering the eye from focusing correctly on the retina, causing distorted vision. The more the cornea bulges, the worse your vision may become. The condition usually appears in the late teens or early 20s and progresses for one or two decades. In severe cases, the swelling can cause cracks, requiring eye drops to treat.
Dr. Mercer can take corneal curvature measurements and test for irregular astigmatism to determine if you have keratoconus. Treatment options include eyeglasses or soft contact lenses for mild cases. In more moderate cases, rigid gas-permeable contact lenses are sufficient. In rare cases, the patient will need a corneal transplant.
Scleral lenses are the most distinctive type of contact lens available. The lens sits on the white of the eye (scleral), which is less sensitive than the cornea, and not the clear dome-like most lenses. This creates a fluid-filled reservoir to correct corneal irregularities making these lenses an excellent option for those who have an altered cornea from one of the following conditions:
Further, if you’ve had a corneal transplant or refractive surgery like LASIK, scleral lenses are for you.
Because Dr. Mercer is an expert at scleral lens fittings, many patients come to see her from cities like Clearwater and Tampa Bay. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Mercer today by calling (727) 472-4943 or requesting an appointment online today.

Primary Care Optometry for All Patients
Certified Optometric Physician
Your vision and comfort is our top priority. We’re proud to fulfill “hard-to-fit” prescriptions for contact lenses and glasses for patients with specialty eye care needs, even if you bring in an outside prescription. We also provide specialty Ortho-K contact lenses for kids. No matter how specialized or complex your vision needs are, our Trinity team is here to help.
As you age, it’s ordinary to experience new vision problems. Unfortunately, most common eye conditions are age-related. Thus, vision care is essential as you get older. The True Eye in Trinity’s eye doctors specialize in senior vision care to ensure you don’t succumb to these conditions since most are treatable. And since we accept most major insurance plans, new patients can rest assured that the vision care they need is affordable.
When it comes to aging and your eyes, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a prevalent retinal eye disease for those 55 and older. Actually, it’s the leading cause of vision loss for patients over age 65.
AMD causes blurred central vision due to damage to the macula (part of the retina), which controls straight-ahead vision. Although those with AMD won’t experience complete vision loss, it makes it difficult to see faces clearly and carry out daily activities, such as:
Although there are two types of AMD, dry and wet, dry AMD is more common. Dry AMD progresses in three stages, usually over several years. It’s best to get a diagnosis early to prevent further vision damage, especially because there’s no treatment for late-stage dry AMD. Since there are no symptoms for early-stage dry AMD and very mild symptoms for intermediate dry AMD, you’ll only get a diagnosis and treatment if you have regular eye exams. This can drastically help slow the condition’s progression.
Wet AMD is less common and more severe. Wet AMD is always late-stage, and any stage of dry AMD can become wet AMD. Common symptoms include:
Those with advanced wet AMD will likely require further referral and treatment from an ophthalmology specialist. Our True Eye Experts of Trinity eye doctors will examine and discuss the next steps of your care.
Presbyopia is losing the ability to see close objects or small print. Presbyopia is normal, and it occurs slowly over time. It’s common to notice the change starting between the ages of 35 and 40. If you notice that you’re holding things at arm’s length to see them better or get tired eyes after doing close work, you likely have presbyopia.
Reading glasses or multifocal lenses can significantly help those with presbyopia see better.
Cataracts occur when a cloudy area develops on the eye lens. When cataracts form, they prevent light from passing through the lens to the retina, thus causing blurry vision.
Because cataracts form slowly, you likely won’t experience symptoms like pain or redness. However, if cataracts become large or thick and impact your vision, you will need eye surgery to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear plastic lens.
Cataract surgery is safe, as it’s one of the most performed surgeries. Should you require surgery, our team will answer all your frequently asked questions about the procedure to ease any worries and refer you to a board-certified ophthalmologist to carry out the surgery.
Our eye doctors at True Eye Experts can offer much more than everyday eyeglasses or contact lenses. Below are some specialized eyeglasses you can get from an eye doctor at our Trinity, FL clinic. Just schedule a consultation to get started!
Computer glasses can prevent digital eye strain experienced by blue light. Continuous blue light exposure can damage retinal cells, causing eye irritation like dryness, itchiness, and redness, as well as vision problems such as:
Not to mention digital eye strain can also cause severe headaches, migraines, and neck and shoulder pain. At True Eye Experts of Trinity, we have high-quality computer glasses to block blue light, such as those from ChemTech. Computer glasses are available with or without a prescription.
In the Trinity region, we experience nearly 250 sunny days per year. That means if you aren’t protecting your eyes from the sun, as you would your skin, you’re much more susceptible to eye conditions like:
However, if you wear prescription glasses, you may need to choose between your eyeglasses and sunglasses. Luckily, at True Eye Experts of Trinity, we have prescription eyeglasses to protect your eyes, whether at the beach or simply driving to work.
Reading glasses are ideal for those who need help making text easier to read. These non-prescription glasses magnify text on a page or device. ChemTech glasses are also great to use as readers, especially since, these days, many read on a phone or tablet. We have many different frames and styles when selecting reading glasses, so you’ll definitely find something you like.
If you’re tired of using reading glasses, you may be a good candidate for LASIK surgery. Consult an eye doctor True Eye Experts of Trinity to see if this surgery would improve your quality of life. Although the eye doctors here don’t perform LASIK surgery, if you’re a suitable candidate, they will refer you to an ophthalmology professional for further assistance.
Our optometrist can help fit you or your child for sports goggles. These specialty glasses offer the highest level of eye protection while playing sports because they fit snuggly to the face.
You should not wear your everyday glasses while playing sports. The lenses can easily shatter and cause an eye injury. Sports glasses use more durable and safer, sturdier lenses for physical activity. In fact, these glasses can be up to ten times more impact-resistant than typical eyeglasses. They allow the wearer to see better, enhancing their performance while playing sports.
There’s nothing better than looking through a freshly cleaned pair of glasses. Most eyeglass wearers use a tissue or shirt sleeve as cleaning tools to achieve this level of cleanliness. Sadly, using these on your eyeglasses will cause micro-scratches, lessening the lens quality with time. This can cause your vision to suffer.
While there are effective at-home cleaning methods, we offer thorough eyeglass cleaning for customers. We’ll take the glasses apart and place them in the ultrasonic cleaner to eliminate any bacteria and residue on the surfaces. We also have small brushes to gently scrub the frames with detergent to remove any stubborn dirt or grime.
In addition to cleaning your eyeglasses, we also offer adjustments and repairs. When you visit the clinic, we’ll identify what needs adjusting with a quick assessment. Usually, we can make adjustments on the spot, even if you didn’t purchase the glasses in our store.
We handle minor repairs in-house, such as:
If your glasses need significant repair, we’ll send them out for servicing. Our repair partners have a quick turnaround time, but if you need a backup pair of glasses on hand in case of emergencies like this, we’ll help you select a pair.
Let us know if you have old eyeglasses that you’re no longer using – put them to good use by donating them to the Lions Club. True Eye Experts of Trinity has a donation box in the lobby to collect eyeglasses on behalf of the The Lions Club.
The Lions accept the following:
Please do not donate broken or incomplete glasses or contact lenses. The Lions Club doesn’t have a recycling program for these items.
